MEAT II

OCTOBER 17, 1987
There was nothing left in this world for her, especially not a bullet. Laura threw the gun onto the ground and stood up. She looked down at Rick’s remains and smiled. She turned to walk toward the road, but she couldn’t, she halted where she stood. She couldn’t let him go, not like this, she had found a way to love him over the years, she wasn’t ready to leave him. She turned and took three steps, kneeled down and took the severed head.
Laura walked down the side of the road, resting Rick’s bloody head in her arms like an infant. She paused as she saw a car approaching. Her eyes widened at the sight of the car, the sight of savior from the blistering heat. She jumped up and down repeatedly screaming, her faint voice screaming out. “Help me! I’m going to die! Help me, please! Help!!!” The car became closer and she screamed for her life.
The car slammed on the brakes as Laura threw the severed head onto the windshield as it tried to pass by her. She ran over to the car and banged on the window. The woman inside the car was screaming, five minutes later she couldn’t force another scream from her throat. She unlocked the door and let Laura in. They drove down the street, the woman pale, Laura silent, distantly staring outside, crying.
The car drove down the long road, Laura stared out, eyes widening. The world around her grew dark, she closed her eyes trying to make it right, get her world back. Laura turned around in her seat. The world behind them was being ripped to pieces by a black cloud, replaced with a fiery blanket. Laura screamed for the woman to speed up, she screamed, as the fire grew closer, she closed her eyes. Blackness surrounded her as she was pulled upward, she felt her flesh burst open as she was covered in fire, then her body was ripped in half.
Laura’s body jolted forward on the stretcher as she was taken into the E.R. at Carson’s General Hospital. She cried and screamed, kick and bit. “Help me, my souls on fire, my neurons are scorched, my brain is melting. Am I going to die? Someone help me!! Don’t you understand me? What’s wrong with you people?” she yelled. It was happening again, the world was black. She screamed as the Nurse pushing her vanished in the fire that engulfed her face, fire so hot the her teeth cracked into tiny pieces. The world turned black.
Laura woke up; she was strapped to a hospital bed, unable to move. She was overcome by seizures, she spat blood across the room, it splattered against the wall. She bit the straps, tearing through them. She fell off the bed with a violent jolt and landed on the floor. She laid on the floor, coughing up blood, teeth, and maggots. She screamed as Rick burst through the door, he had a cleaver in his hand and swung it. Laura’s head flew across the floor. There was a powerful wheezing, once, twice, and then a third time. The world blew up in her lungs.

AUGUST 13,1977

Laura woke up; she was in a hospital bed. “Laura, can you hear me?” a doctor asked, “Laura, you were in an accident. You are at Carson General Hospital.” Laura tried to force words from her mouth; finally she was able to speak. “Where’s Charlotte?” she said. “Charlotte, umm, Charlotte didn’t make it.” The nurse said. “What year is it?” Laura asked. “It’s 1977, when you arrived you thought it was 1987.” The nurse replied. Laura closed her eyes as a tear rolled down her cheek.

JULY 17, 1979

Laura walked down the street with her friend Angela. They passed the closed Crawson Food Market. Laura could feel the tenseness of the atmosphere. She knew what made the area so tense, the things she knew. She had turned them into simplified facts. She told them to herself every morning, and now, once again she said them to herself.
Rick Vernon was a murderer. Rick Vernon had tried to kill her. Rick Vernon was arrested. Rick Vernon had escaped. Rick Vernon was alive, more than alive, immortal. She had not shot him in the future; she had made it all up as her brain had burnt on the hot asphalt after Charlotte had crashed the car. Charlotte was dead. Laura was the only survivor.
Laura and Angela walked into the midnight movie theater. Laura purchased two tickets for “HALLOWEEN”. The two girls stood in line at the concession stand talking about their days. “Well, I went to therapy finally, it was completely fake.” Laura said. “Right, right, all this stuff is just fake, like I bet we aren’t even real.” Angela replied. Laura gave her a look and then ordered the popcorn.
Laura walked into the dark theater and sat down in the very last row. “So Adam and Stan said that they saw Charlie and Dana outside the general store stealing the plants out of the parking lot.” Angela said. “Oh, how classy, I guess they were trying to compete with Todd and Dan.” Laura replied. “Whatever they did it won’t compare to what Lonnie and Lola did, they got bored so they went over to Crawson Food Market and hung a dog in the freezer.” Laura grew tense, “Well, just wake me up when it’s over.” She said.
Laura woke up in the theater, beside her sat Angela, staring blankly at the screen. “Angela, what’s going on?” she asked. Laura didn’t move. “Angela, answer me!” she screamed. She moved over and looked into Angela’s eyes, nothing. Laura turned her head forward and jumped awake as Rick Vernon swung a cleaver at her. “No!” she screamed as she jumped awake.
Laura sat in bed later that night reading her book. She heard a noise outside; she got up to look out the window. Perhaps it was the milkman; perhaps the paperboy delivering tomorrows papers, perhaps it was nothing, just a stray dog or cat. Perhaps it was HIM. Laura didn’t see anything.
The light flicked on waking Laura. She rolled over to see Angela sitting beside her. “What woman?” Laura demanded. “I heard something down stairs, I think it was in 4D.” Angela said. “We live on the fifth of six floors in an apartment building, everything is downstairs.” Laura said, “But we’ll go check.” Twenty minutes later Laura had dressed and was walking down the stairs with Angela.
As they exited the stairwell the door slammed behind them. Laura walked over to 4D and grabbed hold on the doorknocker, “You’re sure?” she asked. “Positive.” Angela said. As Laura swung the knocker into the door it opened completely. Angela walked inside and turned on the light. “Go, go, go. Get out of here.” She screamed as Charlie Sanders and Dana Bawer both hung from the ceiling. Laura shove confused Angela out the door and pounded on 3D, she opened the door, no one inside. Angela opened 2D and water flooded from the apartment and pieces of tattered flesh floated throughout.
“Forget this.” Angela said as she followed Laura down to floor C. The door was locked, the stairwell started on floor C, so they were forced to go up. They exited into floor F. They screamed as they made their way through the darkness to the roof exit. They climbed up the narrow stairway and tripped over all the corpses of the buildings residents. They finally forced the door open. When they got outside they found the bodies of Adam Karwowskie and Stan Crawson.
They tried to go down the fire escape. Angela went first, Laura following. Angela reached the bottom latter and began to climb down. The latter broke off twelve feet from the ground. “I’ll go get help.” Angela screamed. Laura was trapped, she walked toward the door, but just as soon as she reached it she was thrown back as Rick Vernon kicked it open. Laura threw her hand over her mouth and snuck around to the back of the roof. She looked down, thirty feet below was the Crawson Food Market roof.
She turned and saw Rick moving toward her. He threw a kitchen knife through the air. It stuck into her shoulder. She screamed out in pain as she pulled it out, blood gushing out of her shoulder. She turned away and jumped. She fell through the air crashed through the roof of the store. She was out cold.
Laura woke up ten minutes later; the knife was beside her still. She stood up, her leg bending as the bone forced itself through her skin. She screamed but ignored the pain as she grabbed the knife. She walked through the store, avoiding cracked floor tiles and police tape. Laura made her way to the freezer. She knew there was a small window that she could escape through. She readied herself to enter the freezer.
She opened the door and gagged as the smell of rotten meat cut into her lungs. She continued further in and tripped over something. She felt it with her hand, it was a dog. She jumped away but slammed into two objects hanging from the ceiling, she could only guess that it was Lonnie and Lola. She ventured on.
Laura reached the window and opened it. She crawled half way out as Rick Vernon grabbed her leg and pulled her into the darkness.
